actually you can not link to any .php file in themes folder. WordPress and the theme will show the content of 404.php if it can’t find an entry with this (invalid) url.
This error comes on any .php file you want to open directly without loading wordpress first.
So not using any 404 custom service should work, if GoDaddy doesn’t redirect to their own 404 page in case of non-existing links.
You could try to point the 404 custom link just to your site without specifying any page. I guess WordPress will handle than this 404 and showing you arthemias 404.php.
