in footer.php you are exactly at the right place to delete something.

I show you here with explanation what does what:

<div id="mostcommented" class="clearfloat"> HERE MIDDLE SECTION STARTS
STUFF BELOW SHOWS MOST COMMENTED POSTS
<h3>Most Commented</h3>
<ul><?php $result = $wpdb->get_results("SELECT comment_count,ID,post_title FROM $wpdb->posts ORDER BY comment_count DESC LIMIT 0 , 5"); foreach ($result as $topfive) { $postid = $topfive->ID; $title = $topfive->post_title; $commentcount = $topfive->comment_count; if ($commentcount != 0) { ?> <li><a href="<?php echo get_permalink($postid); ?>" title="<?php echo $title ?>"><?php echo $title ?></a></li> <?php } } ?>
</ul>
END OF MOST COMMENTED POSTS
STUFF BELOW IS TO SHOW YOUR WIDGET (YOUR RSS-FEED)
<?php /* Widgetized sidebar, if you have the plugin installed. */ if ( !function_exists(‚dynamic_sidebar‘) || !dynamic_sidebar(6) ) : ?>
<?php endif; ?>
END OF WIDGET PART IF THERE IS
</div>END OF MIDDLE SECTION
So to remove the ‚hardcoded‘ most commented part you just delete the line starting with h3 .. Most Commented down to the /ul, which marks the end of this list.
MAKE A BACKUP OF footer.php first!

now delete exactly this:

<h3>Most Commented</h3>
<ul><?php $result = $wpdb->get_results("SELECT comment_count,ID,post_title FROM $wpdb->posts ORDER BY comment_count DESC LIMIT 0 , 5"); foreach ($result as $topfive) { $postid = $topfive->ID; $title = $topfive->post_title; $commentcount = $topfive->comment_count; if ($commentcount != 0) { ?> <li><a href="<?php echo get_permalink($postid); ?>" title="<?php echo $title ?>"><?php echo $title ?></a></li> <?php } } ?>
</ul>
That’s it
